Tension headaches can be caused by a variety of factors such as: jaw clenching or grinding, low blood sugar, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, arthritis, poor posture, sleeping position, computer use or injury. They are typically like a band around the head usually starting at the base of the skull or forehead. If a headache occurs from clenching, it is usually around the jaw/ TMJ area and the temporal areas of the head.

Migraine headaches can be triggered by hormonal changes, dietary changes, dehydration, stress, anxiety, bright light, smoke, A/C, birth control pills or certain smells. They are typically one-sided and unrelenting throbbing pain. There are different phases of migraines such as experiencing an aura, flashing lights, blurred vision or brain fog before the headache phase begins. Migraines can occur without this phase as well. In Florida, migraine symptoms are exacerbated by the bright sun, high humidity and A/C.

There are many OTC medications for tension headaches and prescriptions for migraines which are helpful in prevention and reducing symptoms associated with the headaches. I have witnessed over the years chiropractic care minimizing or eliminating debilitating headaches and reducing the need to rely on these medications. Chiropractic adjustments to the base of the skull and the first two cervical vertebra are key when addressing headaches. An adjustment to the jaw may also be necessary. Most people know what will trigger their headache episodes and taking steps to minimize these potential triggers is key in managing them.
